Coach David’s love for soccer runs deep. “I always had lots of love for soccer and always believed that the future of the community lies in the hands of our youth,” he explained. For him, football is more than a game. It is a tool for mentorship, guidance and mental stability. His mission is to help young people make better decisions in life, using the discipline and joy of sport as a foundation. At Marikana All Stars FC, players are not just athletes but they are family. Coach David nurtures their love for the game while ensuring they feel comfort and belonging.
“I teach them that we are a family and we should love one another because to me they are like my children,” he said. This philosophy has created a safe space where young people can connect, stay active, and learn teamwork at an age when many are vulnerable to negative influences. The challenges facing youth in informal settlements are stark.
With limited support from families and communities, many children fall into cycles of drug abuse and gangsterism. Coach David has witnessed the reality at firsthand is willing to change it. “No one really cares about children in the informal settlement, which is why most of them en up being drug addicts or becoming gangsters. That kills hope for our future generations,” he reflects.
His vision is to prove that something good can emerge from Marikana, that hidden talent can be nurtured into professional football careers. Looking ahead, Coach David dreams of transforming Marikana All Stars FC into a full academy. His goal is to provide structured training, mentorship and exposure to opportunities that can propel young players into the professional world.
“My vision is to one day turn it into an academy and produce talent hidden in the community into the professional world of football,” he said with determination. In order to achieve this vision, support is crucial. Coach David appeals to funders, sponsors and partners to recognize the value of investing in grassroots football. “We will appreciate every little help we can get,” he emphasizes.
For him, sponsorship is not just about uniforms or equipment. It is about changing lives, restoring hope and proving that informal settlements can produce greatness. Marikana All Stars FC stands as a testament to resilience, passion and community spirit. In a place where opportunities are scarce, Coach David has created a platform for young people to thrive. His work reminds us that football it is a lifeline, a classroom and a family not only a sport.
With the right support, the dreams of Marikana’s youth can move from dusty fields to stadiums, carrying with them the pride of a community that refused to be forgotten.
