Khwezi empowers its community through various tangible initiatives. Its mission and programs focus on educating, empowering, and mobilising individuals, families, and communities to improve their social, economic, and spiritual well-being. It tackles issues that directly affect its audience, including education, health, crime prevention, and disability, among others. Khwezi promotes participation and civic engagement by encouraging dialogue, debate, and community decision-making.
Its Outdoor Broadcast van extends this work into rural areas, where the station discusses relevant issues, interacts with listeners, and shares essential information on topics such as health, human rights, legal advice, and the environment. In this way, radio becomes a practical platform for informed, two-way community engagement. Khwezi's cultural preservation is outstanding. It prioritises local language and cultural significance, preserving and promoting local culture, language and traditions. This is especially important in this indigenous community, where mainstream media often ignores them. About 90% of its broadcasts are in isiZulu, with occasional segments in English and German.
Their local reach and trust make them highly effective in emergencies. During natural disasters, pandemics, or conflicts, Khwezi delivers life-saving information more swiftly and directly than national outlets. The station promotes accountability by providing communities with a platform to voice their grievances and hold leaders accountable. It fosters transparency and local governance, creating a space where the public can hold authorities accountable and demand the services they need. Additionally, its listeners' club acts as a link between the radio station and local political officials, facilitating feedback and highlighting issues related to service delivery.
Khwezi uniquely develops skills by nurturing talent and providing opportunities through broadcasting. The station focuses on talent development and exposure, attracting individuals from the community, including local choirs, gospel artists, and presenters. Community members are given the chance to showcase their creative work, including poetry and drama. Khwezi develops local talent by giving rural and underprivileged community members opportunities to present, produce content, showcase creative work, and gain practical experience through broadcasting and training.
