Powering Dreams: Isaac Mabapa Turns a Childhood Inspiration into a Thriving Electrical Career
By: Phuti Ramaphakela

For Isaac Tumetsi Mabapa, electricity is more than wires, switches and circuits—it is a family legacy, a profession and a way of creating opportunities in his community. The 35-year-old from Ga-Mamabolo, Komaneng, Limpopo, developed his passion for electrical work while watching his father work as an electrician.

“Growing up, I loved watching my father troubleshoot complex wiring issues. I admired how he enjoyed technical challenges and, most importantly, how seriously he took safety”, he said

That early inspiration shaped Tumetsi’s career. After completing primary school at Mahlanhle Primary School and matriculating at Mathukana Secondary School, he studied Heavy Current Electrical Engineering at Capricorn TVET College.

Today, he is an accredited artisan electrician through Indlela Trade Centre, a registered Installation Electrician with the Department of Employment and Labour, and a GMR2 Machinery Supervisor accredited by NOSA. Tumetsi says electrical work requires dedication, patience and a willingness to keep learning.

“To become an electrician, you need love, passion, problem-solving ability and critical thinking. You must get the right training, gain workplace experience and complete the required assessments.”

He is now putting his skills to work through Mokgatike Electrical and Construction, a business built around professional service, safety and trust. The company’s mission is to build long-term relationships with clients by exceeding their expectations, while its vision is to become a highly respected electrical services provider. One of the projects that stands out in Tumetsi’s career is his involvement in renewable energy and battery-storage installations.

“Working with solar PV microgrids and commercial inverter systems allowed me to work with cutting-edge green technology. It is exciting to be part of the modernisation of the energy grid”, he added.

However, running an electrical business is not without challenges. It requires long working hours, tight deadlines and misunderstandings between technical teams and general contractors can sometimes make projects difficult. He believes communities need greater awareness about the importance of using properly registered electrical professionals.

“People need to understand the difference between registered electricians and those who are not registered. Electrical work requires proper skills, compliance and safety. Community members continue to support my business because registered electricians play an important role in inspecting installations, finding faults and ensuring that electrical work meets the required standards”, he said

Mokgatike Electrical and Construction promotes its services through social media, business-to-business networking, newspapers, posters, business cards and referrals.

“Electrical work is an essential skilled trade where precision, safety and continuous learning are paramount”, he concluded.
