Young Footballer Refuses to Let Disability Stop His Dream
By Phuti Ramaphakela

DANGANYA, KWAZULU-NATAL – Courage, determination and an unwavering love for football define the remarkable journey of Ntando Zwane, a young learner from the small township of Danganya in KwaZulu-Natal. Despite losing one of his legs after a snake bite, Ntando refused to let tragedy end his dream of playing the sport he loves. Today, he continues to inspire his community by proving that resilience can overcome even the greatest challenges.

"I started playing football at the age of six after being inspired by Themba Zwane of Mamelodi Sundowns," he said. "From that day, I never looked back." However, his journey took a heartbreaking turn when he was bitten by a snake, resulting in the loss of one of his legs.

"It was a very painful experience. Watching my friends continue playing while I stood on the sidelines was one of the hardest moments of my life," he recalls. "Through it all, my family stood by me. Their love and support gave me the strength to keep going, and I will always be grateful to them." Rather than allowing the trauma to define his future, Ntando made a courageous decision after recovering—he returned to the football field.

He joined Sazi Lions (Ace Milan Football Club) in Ilfracombe, where he found not only a team but also a second family. "My coach and teammates accepted me exactly as I am," he said. "They never made me feel different. Instead, they encouraged me every day and helped me regain my confidence."

Their support has enabled Ntando to enjoy the game once again and focus on developing his talent. Ntando has set his sights high. His dream is to play professional football overseas and one day represent South Africa on the international stage. Beyond his playing career, he also hopes to become a football coach, using his own story to inspire children facing difficult circumstances.

"I want young people to know that they should never give up, no matter what happens in life. I hope they can look at my journey and believe that anything is possible,” he added. Ntando's coach, Sazi Mthethwa, speaks proudly of the young footballer's determination and character.

"Ntando is one of the hardest-working and most disciplined players I have coached," said Coach Sazi. "He is always willing to learn and improve. At first, some coaches were reluctant to give him an opportunity because of his disability, but today many coaches and supporters admire him. That makes me very proud." Mthethwa describes Ntando as an exceptional young man with a bright future.

"He is an extraordinary talent with a wonderful personality. I truly wish him every success." Ntando Zwane's story is a powerful reminder that setbacks do not have to define a person's future. With determination, family support and a passion for football, he continues to chase his dreams while inspiring others to believe that disability is not inability.

His journey is proof that true champions are not only measured by the goals they score, but by the courage they show in overcoming life's greatest obstacles. As he continues to work towards his dream of playing professional football, Ntando is already a winner in the hearts of many—an inspiring example of resilience, hope and the unstoppable spirit of Africa's youth.
